Why safe vehicles matter

Improving how well a vehicle protects people in a crash or how well it can avoid a crash in the first place has great potential in helping to reduce trauma on our roads. If every vehicle could be upgraded to the safest in its class, serious trauma would be reduced by a third.

Vehicles that are designed well and are safe can either prevent a crash from happening or help absorb and reduce the forces of impact. This in turn can help reduce the impact forces transferred to the car's occupants to less than 30km/h. Impact forces from speeds above 30km/h significantly increase the risk of death.
