Towards Zero Leadership Symposium 2016
The Towards Zero partners recently brought together community, business and government leaders from city and regional areas for two road safety conferences.
The two symposiums opened up discussion around the shared responsibility of road safety in Victoria. Both events also gave leaders the opportunity to find out how they can get involved in Towards Zero.

Melbourne 2016

At the conference, the road safety partners canvassed their role as leaders in making changes and empowering local government and individuals. Councils discussed their aspirations to become smart cities, the need for liveability to drive road safety and innovative technologies, like heat maps, to better understand crashes and problem areas.
Head of Safe System Road Infrastructure Program (SSRIP) Michael Nieuwesteeg described the investment into projects to turn risky roads into safe roads. Swedish guest Johan Strandroth, from the Swedish Transport Administration, showed the results Sweden has had since emphasising the importance of road design. On workplace road safety, MUARC researcher Sharon Newnam spoke about MUARC’s recommendations while representatives from Optus, AFMA and Australia Post discussed their current policies and new challenges.

Creswick 2016

The Creswick event focused on the challenges and data around crashes in rural areas, and the road safety issues they highlight. Discussion revolved around how to engage the community through regional businesses, consultation and listening to the needs of different regions.
